In Europe, the rubber industry is a highly innovative sector giving directly more than 360.000 jobs. Although tires comprise a majority of this, the application areas of rubber varies from general rubber goods to highly advanced technological solutions for example in medical and robotic applications. The rubber industry faces major challenges in developing more sustainable, safe and still competitive rubbers for the future. To ensure the sustainability and the competitiveness of this significant sector in the future, highly skilled and open-minded workforce capable to evolve new innovative ideas and to implement them on the market is required. Thus, a solid rubber research community needs to be generated still within the study.
The future is in the hands of young people respective students, those who will be the experts in the upcoming centuries. Thus, current PhD students play a key role in the research and the development of rubbers in the future.
