The Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions as well as the coronavirus pandemic have
significantly changed the workplace environment along with the occupational health and safety
requirements. The changes in the work environment that are occurring due to technological and
economic advances, globalisation and climate change as well as the coronavirus-related
measures have an effect on the contents and structure of occupational health and safety
policies. Virtualisation of workplaces and changes in work preferences among the coming
generation1 make enterprises and, particularly, managers of multinational corporations
reappraise their attitudes towards creation of safe working environment, development of new
and up-to-date occupational health and safety programmes as well as mental health of
managers and employees as such. Furthermore, these changes make the businesses and
managers adopt a strategic approach to OHS that would create safe workplace environment and
conditions for maintaining and supporting mental health of employees and managers. The
monograph analyses and describes the changes in approaches to OHS (occupational health and
safety) at the beginning of the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions (Industry 4.0 and
Industry 5.0) and the coronavirus pandemic, which have created the need for changes in
complex understanding of mental health issues. The current challenges that enterprises and
companies are dealing with prove that OHS cannot be focused solely on work-related injuries
and illnesses. It is necessary to analyse their causes. The list of common causes of workplace
accidents needs to be expanded to include the new psychosomatic disorders and syndromes
that have recently occurred in connection with information and communication technologies
used in the workplace. They include tinnitus, burnout as well as substance and non-substance
addictions such as drug addictions and addictions to computers and mobile phones. These
common problems are currently faced by both managers and employees and they change their
attitude to work, quality of their performance and their overall attitude toward the company. In
most cases, these syndromes are behavioural. They fall under OHS and they require strategic
research, early detection and continuous reduction and elimination of their occurrence in the
workplace.
