Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are considered to be one of the most important
drivers of economic development for many developed and developing countries. Despite
the significant contribution towards economic development, the existing literature on
entrepreneurial finance shows that SMEs are facing more financial constraints compared
to large firms. This thesis aims to examine financial constraints on SMEs from two
different perspectives. The first goal of the thesis is to examine the determinants of
collateral. The literature shows that the lack of collateral is one of the first and foremost
problems for SMEs to access bank loans. Therefore, we would like to focus on the factors
that affect collateral requirements on SME loans.
