This dissertation is the outcome of four years of doctoral studies with plentiful
learning opportunities. In this preamble, I would like to express my heart-felt
thanks to those who joined me in this process and who made the journey so
valuable.
First of all, I want to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Ales Gregar.
Without his support and encouragement, this journey would have never been
possible. He gave me considerable freedom in developing and executing my
personal ideas and plans and was always there at the critical junctions of the
research. His close supervision and instructions have been of critical importance
for me to stay on track during the whole process. His support and guidance mean
an enormous help in furthering myself as a researcher.
My thanks also go to the faculty members and Ph.D. students at FaME, Tomas
Bata University (UTB). The faculty members are so sharing and caring. They are
a great source of support and inspiration whenever I come across any trouble both
in studies and life. The peer Ph.D. students at FaME did teach me the value of
companionship in demanding situations and made my stay in Czech Republic not
only pleasant but also culturally enriching. It would be a shortcoming if I fail to
show my deep gratitude to UTB for warding me not only ordinary scholarship but
also extraordinary ones. Those are a great source of fund allowing me to
concentrate on my research.
I also want to express my sincere thanks to managerial staff and leadership of
30 public universities equally located in 3 regions of Vietnam for their willingness
to participate in this study. Regardless of their tight working schedule, they helped
fill out the lengthy questionnaire and some with hour-long interview. Without
their support, this study can not be completed.
My deep gratitude also goes to former president and incumbent president of
Hanoi University, Vietnam – Prof. Nguyen Dinh Luan and Prof. Nguyen Van
Trao respectively for the best conditions they provided for me during this painful
but exciting journey. I also would like to thank my colleagues at the International
Office of Hanoi University for shouldering the demanding tasks of the office
during my absence.
My family deserves a special word of thanks. My parent’s ongoing guidance
and support have provided me with a solid base to help me in my further life. I
am deeply indebted for that. Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Lam Thuy
for her sacrifice taking care of the family during my study, standing by my side
and providing me with the support needed to overcome many challenges during
the past four years. The final words of thank go to my 2 angles, Gia Linh and Gia
Minh. Your smiles on Facetime are a precious source of motivation and are the
candles that led me through this tough journey.
