“So far, the academic literature has given less attention to the phonetics of
the Czech language than it deserves. If we look through the Czech scientific works
concerned about the Czech language, we may discover that majority of them deals
with analysis of the written (seen) language, not with language that is spoken
(heard). We may have excellent connoisseurs and meticulous observers of
the Czech phonetics (for instance Hus, Blahoslav, Kolár or Durdík). However, those
are merely exceptions. Ever since the beginning of our political freedom,
the importance of spoken and heard word rises more and more. Radio,
cinematography, scientific or political lectures are overwhelming our lives and draw
attention to the need of being finely attentive to the phonetics of Czech language
and insisting on exploring it further” (Mazlová 1946).
