Palaeolithic and Mesolithic of the Czech Lands (Moravia and Bohemia) in the European Context

Last year the Moravian Museum published the Czech version of the Encyclopaedia of the Palaeolithic and the Mesolithic in the Czech Lands (Oliva 2016), the first part of which, a synthetic study, gave a brief summary of previous findings. This synthetic part is now presented to the international public. Rather than discussing the existing opinions, the author put forward a number of reflections to facilitate the updating of the discourse. It consists in a rigorous solution of the variance between the technical perfection of lithic tools, usually considered to be a means of adaptation on the one hand, and their long-term uniformity over time and space, across environmental zones, on the other. The solution of this inconsistency tends to be sought in the sphere of social activities that fill up free time, since in the primeval era it was impossible to enjoy leisure in private and make use of the media that are common today, but almost entirely in the interaction with other individuals and publicly. Many technical discoveries could have been accomplished to make life easier, but this never occurred. Demonstrating their craft or idea to the others sufficed; the devisers could continue living in the same old way. Anthropoids (and no doubt also the first humans) were not concerned with improving the material side of their life, but it was always important for them to outdo others, or (in humans) to surpass their neighbours and friends in some respect.
